The New Adelphi Club had been an unremarkable working men’s club in Hull, when, in 1984 it was taken over by Paul Jackson, who was determined to turn it into a dedicated music venue. Over the following decades it played host to bands such as Pulp, Oasis, Radiohead and The Stone Roses, in many cases giving bands their first gigs outside of their home cities.
Back in 2009 I would sometimes work at the bar there and, with the 25th anniversary approaching, I was asked to make some sort of film about the place. I borrowed a couple of cameras, wrangled some people to operate them and we shot whatever we could. Unfortunately the sound recordings from the gigs were lost in one of the Hull floods but most of the footage remains and I cobbled together a 40 minute documentary. Here is a trailer for that documentary.
